A couple years back, we were lucky enough to get to know the founder and tea icon Steven Smith and taste teas with him. He answered some questions for us about his tea practice and we chatted with him about lessons learned after several decades in the tea business. Smith Teamaker is your third big tea venture in your career. What brought you out of retirement? We spent a year in a small village outside Avignon France where I met small producers of cheese, wine, biscuits, produce and saucisson. Each product was hand-crafted and made in small quantities and the producer was selling his or her product to the public. I liked the intimacy, the authenticity and being able to speak directly with the producer or see the product being made.
