Rwanda Emerges

It is difficult to talk about Rwandan coffee without talking about the tragedies from which the coffee farming sector in that country recovered. Many coffee growing communities were decimated during the genocide 20 years ago and coffee farms were abandoned. Then, just when coffee growers were starting to rebuild and reestablish their farms and mills, international coffee prices hit historic lows. Remarkably, commercial coffee growing in Rwanda not only survived but thrived. Over the last decade Rwanda has gone from an emerging origin for specialty coffee to take its place on the world stage as a consistent producer of specialty grade coffee. One of the pioneers in Rwanda’s journey to improve the quality of coffee is Epiphanie Mukashyaka, who lost her husband and much of her extended family in the genocide.
