I've needed to place the grinder on a small cutting board with a groove near the edge in order to collect the coffee that doesn't land in the collection portion itself. Even so there's always coffee spreading around my countertop- so much so that we have to vacuum the countertop periodically to get it all. Since we live in Colorado the dryness seems to create a static charge and disperse the grounds even more; something that happens even when we've been drinking French press for awhile. I thought the static charge was what kept the grounds in the grinder, causing an accumulation inside, but another reviewer mentioned the same problem. The grinder is difficult to clean- although I haven't disassembled it! It would seem foolish to need to do that.
