Sandwiched between coffee-producing giants Colombia and Peru, and growing a disproportionately large percentage of lower-quality coffea Canephora (robusta), Ecuador’s coffees didn’t catch our attention until relatively recently. We began conversing with the Fapecafes cooperative of Loja, Ecuador, in 2010 and, beginning in 2011, we began buying coffees from various groups of smallholder farmers scattered throughout the mountains of southern Ecuador, all of whom are represented by Fapecafes. In 2013, the producer members of Fapecafes were hit hard by coffee leaf rust and couldn’t produce the volume of high-quality coffee that we had contracted with them, but a few farmers with exceptionally well-managed farms managed to separate coffee to offer as single-farmer lots, which is all that Counter Culture will sell under the El Gavilán label this year.
